There are few places in Michigan that feel as magical in the spring as the W.E. Upjohn Peony Garden at Nichols Arboretum in Ann Arbor. Every year, thousands of vibrant peonies bloom in shades of blush, coral, white, and deep pink, creating one of the most breathtaking backdrops for fragrant strolling, garden picnics and marriage proposals. The garden features nearly 800 peony plants representing hundreds of historic varieties and reaches peak bloom between late May and early June, depending on the weather.
When Brad reached out to me to plan a surprise proposal for Chloe, he knew he wanted a location that felt timeless, romantic, and uniquely Michigan. Chloe makes it a point to visit the peony garden every year when in bloom, so Nichols Arboretum was the perfect choice.

Known affectionately as “The Arb,” Nichols Arboretum offers rolling hills, wooded trails, river views, and the iconic Peony Garden that draws visitors from across the country every spring. During peak bloom, thousands of flowers transform the landscape into one of the most photographed locations in Ann Arbor.

As Brad and I planned the surprise, every detail was carefully coordinated, from choosing the perfect path through the garden to timing the proposal when the light was soft and the crowds were lighter.
Although the Peony Garden was the inspiration for the proposal, we decided to have the actual proposal take place in one of the open fields just beyond the crowds. During peak bloom, the garden is incredibly popular, and the couple wanted the moment to feel intimate and personal rather than surrounded by visitors. Nestled in a quiet grassy meadow with spring greenery all around, they were able to enjoy a peaceful, uninterrupted proposal before making their way to the Peony Garden for engagement portraits.
The excitement, happy tears, and genuine surprise made for some of the most authentic photographs. After the proposal, we spent time exploring the garden together, documenting those first moments of engagement while the couple soaked it all in.
One of my favorite parts of photographing proposals is capturing what happens after the “yes.” Once the nerves disappear, couples can simply enjoy being together, laugh, celebrate, and begin imagining the next chapter of their story.
