Planning a Summer Ann Arbor Wedding
A summer Ann Arbor wedding offers a mix of vibrant greenery, walkable downtown, and campus architecture. Couples who choose to get married in Ann Arbor during the summer months benefit from long golden evenings, lush landscapes, and the ability to move easily between ceremony and portrait locations.
Whether you’re hosting a full wedding celebration or a smaller gathering, Ann Arbor provides a refined backdrop that feels authentic without the rush of a large city.
Summer is especially ideal for:
- Outdoor ceremonies
- Downtown Ann Arbor wedding portraits
- University of Michigan campus photos
- Golden hour wedding portraits along the river

Why Ann Arbor Weddings Are So Special

As an Ann Arbor wedding photographer specializing in bespoke events, this intimate celebration stood out for its personalized details and global influences.
Ann Arbor offers a unique combination of:
- Historic architecture and university charm
- Beautiful gardens and riverfront parks
- Walkable downtown streets with character
- A strong local, community-oriented vibe

Summer Ann Arbor Wedding Inspiration
Summer in particular brings:
- Lush greenery
- Golden evening light
- Outdoor ceremony flexibility
- Patio receptions and open-air cocktail hours
It’s one of the best seasons for a wedding in Ann Arbor.
This particular summer wedding embraced everything that makes the city shine:
Romantic First Look and Outdoor Portraits
Soft golden light and tree-lined streets created timeless, natural portraits. Ann Arbor’s mix of historic brick buildings and green spaces makes it easy to capture variety without traveling far.
A Celebration with True Local Flavor
What made this wedding stand out was its authentic “townie” feel — close friends, familiar spaces, and details that reflected the couple’s connection to the city. Ann Arbor weddings feel different when couples lean into what makes the area meaningful to them.
Relaxed, Joyful Reception Energy
Summer receptions in Ann Arbor often flow beautifully from indoor dining to outdoor mingling. The warm weather and walkable surroundings create a relaxed yet vibrant atmosphere.

First Look at the Historic Rackham Auditorium
Jenny’s gown – a sleek, modern silhouette with a fun bow – echoed her personality and Woo, chose a tailored black tuxedo, a classic look.
The couples’ first look took place on the steps of the Rackham Graduate Building, a favorite Ann Arbor landmark. Both Jenny and Woo graduated from the University of Michigan, so including historical architecture in their wedding day story meant a lot. No audience, no performance, just two people deeply in love, beginning their married life together.
Jenny used the opportunity of the quiet moment to give Woo his wedding day present, a Swarovski stone Cala lily pin for his tuxedo, instead of a boutonniere. The elegant pin matched the style of her bouquet immaculately.

Fine Art Wedding Portraits Downtown Ann Arbor
After the first look, we walked through campus for portraits, with stops at Nickels Arcade, the William L. Clements Library, and finally the iconic Law Quad — some of the most visually striking locations in Ann Arbor. Jenny’s minimalist Cala lily bouquet stood out against the building’s brick and limestone facade. At the Law Quad, the gothic arches and winding ivy lent a distinctly European feel, creating scenes that felt plucked from the movies. Their adorable pup Louie with a wedding bowtie made an appearance as well to make the wedding photo session complete.

Best Ann Arbor Wedding Portrait Locations for Summer
One of the biggest advantages of getting married here is access to diverse portrait settings within minutes of each other.
Nature & Garden Portraits
- Nichols Arboretum – Perfect for romantic summer greenery and golden-hour light.
- Matthaei Botanical Gardens – Structured gardens and greenhouse settings ideal for timeless wedding portraits.
Classic Ann Arbor Architecture
- The campus of University of Michigan offers iconic stone archways, historic libraries, and elegant columns that elevate summer wedding portraits.
- Downtown Ann Arbor’s brick streets and neutral storefronts provide a modern, editorial feel.
Because everything is close together, couples can create a varied wedding gallery without adding stress to their timeline — something that makes Ann Arbor wedding photography uniquely flexible.

Reception at a Premier Ann Arbor Steakhouse, the Chop House
Because Jenny and Woo got married a year ago in a more private way, they didn’t include a ceremony in their wedding day celebration. Instead, they wanted to spend more time with their guests. They hosted their wedding dinner in a private room of the Chop House, a refined steakhouse in downtown Ann Arbor. This quintessential Main Street restaurant has a reputation for its moody lighting, old-world service, and fine foods. Before their guests started gathering, Jenny changed into another wedding dress, a beautifully elegant backless gown.
The evening started with a refined cocktail hour. The couple served hors d’oeuvres featuring shrimp, lamb chops and assortment of cheeses to welcome their guests. The bar was open and their trio of signature cocktails were a hit!
Jenny and Woo gathered just about seventy of their nearest and dearest around candlelit tables set with simple, elegant florals in soft creams and greens. Their guests dined surrounded by mahogany-paneled walls, as lobster and steak courses were served. Speeches from family and friends were filled with moments of humor and nostalgia. Just before the couples first dance, Woo and two of his close friends played a few songs in a live performance.
Why Ann Arbor Is Perfect for Authentic, “Townie” Weddings
An authentic Ann Arbor wedding feels connected to place. Instead of a generic ballroom experience, many couples incorporate meaningful local elements:
- Ceremony locations tied to university memories
- Portraits in favorite neighborhood spots
- Reception dinners at locally loved restaurants
- Walking through downtown for candid, documentary-style wedding photos
This sense of local identity is what makes an Ann Arbor wedding feel intimate and personal.

Popular Ann Arbor Wedding Venues to Consider
If you’re inspired by this wedding and planning your own, here are some other well-loved Ann Arbor wedding venues:

Each of these venues offers something distinct — whether you’re drawn to gardens, architecture, or classic campus elegance.

Planning Tips for Ann Arbor Weddings
If you’re planning a wedding in Ann Arbor, here are a few helpful tips:
1. Consider the Season
Summer and early fall are the most popular times for Ann Arbor weddings due to weather and foliage. Book venues early for peak months (May–October). Consider weekday weddings for a quieter downtown experience.
2. Plan for Golden Hour
Schedule portraits during golden hour to avoid harsh midday sun. Ann Arbor’s tree-lined streets and open lawns glow beautifully in the evening. Build 15–20 minutes into your timeline for sunset portraits.
3. Check Permits for Public Spaces
If you’re planning portraits or ceremonies in parks or on university grounds, check permit requirements in advance.
4. Embrace Local Character
From favorite restaurants to neighborhood cocktail spots, incorporating local elements makes Ann Arbor weddings feel uniquely yours.
5. Build in short travel windows between campus and downtown locations
A well-planned summer Ann Arbor wedding allows you to enjoy the season while creating timeless wedding portraits that reflect both your relationship and the city itself.

Strolling through Ann Arbor’s Main Street Down the Rabbit Hole
After dinner, the group blew bubbles and made their way through Ann Arbor’s downtown to another venue, the Rabbit Hole. A tucked-away prohibition style cocktail lounge hidden beneath the city streets — a space that perfectly matched Jenny and Woo’s style. With velvet booths, vintage lighting, and a bar that specializes in expertly crafted drinks, the tone shifted from elegant dinner party to a wild celebration. As late night wedding snacks, the couple served Asian inspired dishes, and set up a fun ramen bar. There were no grand announcements or over-the-top performances. Just good music, strong cocktails, and the kind of unfiltered joy that comes when you’re surrounded by the people who know you best.
