Selden Standard Detroit Wedding: From The Whitney to Castalia
Detroit is known for its rich history, industrial charm, and vibrant food and arts scene—making it a unique setting for a wedding celebration. Whether you’re a local or traveling to the Motor City to tie the knot, Detroit is perfect for couples seeking a stylish wedding experience.
Allison and Dave, self-proclaimed Detroit lovers and foodies, were looking to create a wedding day that felt both personal and elevated. They chose to host an intimate celebration at three of Detroit’s most iconic spots in Midtown, the historic Whitney mansion, the trendy cocktail bar Castalia, and the culinary gem Selden Standard.

Detroit Wedding Ceremony at The Whitney
Tucked away on Woodward Avenue, The Whitney is a stunning Detroit landmark that blends historic architecture with modern luxury. Originally built in 1894 as the home of a wealthy lumber baron, this French-style mansion exudes old-world charm, complete with sweeping staircases, stained-glass windows, and beautifully manicured garden.
Picture yourself getting ready in the bridal suite, and then walking down a grand staircase to exchange vows in an outdoor ceremony surrounded by lush greenery. The Whitney’s stately beauty provides a sophisticated backdrop that feels intimate and elegant. To add a modern pop of color to the wedding arch and to create beautiful floral arrangements for the day, the couple hired Adorn Fine Flowers.
One of the highlights of getting married at The Whitney was the ability to celebrate in a space that tells Allison and Dave’s story. They often attend brunches and tea services at The Whitney, enjoying the mansion’s rich history and stunning architectural details. To make their experience even more meaningful, they included their beloved dog Boomer in the ceremony and family photos.

Cocktail Hour at Castalia: Cocktail Experience Paired with Sfumato Scents
After Allison and Dave said their “I dos” at the Whitney, it was time to head to Castalia in their red Miata (which we couldn’t resist but incorporate in their wedding photoshoot). Castalia, a moody cocktail lounge located in the heart of Detroit’s vibrant Midtown hospitality scene, was a symbolic choice. On their first date the couple spent several hours talking over a cocktail tasting at this local spot.
Known for its friendly atmosphere and innovative drink menu, Castalia offers the perfect spot for a chic wedding cocktail hour. It features a range of signature cocktails crafted by mixologists who elevate the experience with paired Sfumato scents. Its intimate, atmospheric setting with dark wood, exposed brick, and moody lighting makes it ideal for a sophisticated Detroit vibe, while the outdoor seating area stays relaxed and comfortable.
Allison and Dave’s offerings for their guests during cocktail hour also featured Asian inspired snacks – the selection of various Vietnamese bánh mì sandwiches and homemade spam musubi were an absolute hit!

Al Fresco Wedding Dinner at Selden Standard
As the night continued, Allison and Dave’s curated meal awaited at Selden Standard. This restaurant is one of Detroit’s most beloved and acclaimed for its creative, farm-to-table menu. Selden Standard offers a dining experience that combines seasonal ingredients and a communal ambiance—making it a unique venue for an al fresco wedding dinner.
The restaurant specializes in shareable plates, allowing guests to savor a variety of dishes throughout the evening. From mouthwatering small plates to hearty mains, Allison and Dave’s personalized wedding menu set the stage for a culinary feast. The menu featured dishes such as heirloom tomato panzanella, sweet corn agnolotti, beef tartare with a quail egg, roasted squash with pistachio dukkah and squid ink rigatoni. Wine and cocktail pairings along with a custom cake from the studio of Sweet Heather Anne made this dining experience pure Detroit.

Why Detroit Weddings Work
This intimate wedding in Detroit at three iconic spots beautifully highlights a non-traditional approach to hosting a highly personalized micro-wedding celebration. Here’s why I love this combination of venues for couples looking for something unique and intimate:
- Historic charm meets modern sophistication: Starting at The Whitney, Allison and Dave married in a location rich in history and close to their heart. The mansion’s traditional grandeur provided a classical backdrop for outdoor vows, while the transition to Castalia’s moody bar and Selden Standard’s cozy garden setting added an authentic yet modern city vibe.
- Personalized atmosphere: By keeping the guest list small capped at about 30 guests and choosing venues that offer intimate, personal experiences, this wedding itinerary allowed Allison and Dave to focus on what really matters on a wedding day—the connection with each other and their guests. Each location offered a private, relaxed atmosphere, ensuring they enjoyed every moment without feeling overwhelmed by a large guest list.
- Culinary excellence: Detroit is home to a thriving food scene, and a wedding day is the perfect time to indulge in it. Rather than booking a traditional wedding venue with the same old dinner menu, Castalia’s craft cocktails and Selden Standard’s fine dining created a top notch experience. Allison and Dave worked with the venues to make sure the personalized cocktail and dinner menus were crafted to their taste buds.
- The Detroit spirit: Detroit has a vibrant energy, blending a rich industrial history with contemporary cultural reinvention. By hosting their micro-wedding in the places that the couple often visits, they not only embraced a sense of place, but also celebrated the community that has brought it all together.

Hosting an intimate wedding in Detroit is a chance to immerse yourself in the city’s unique spirit and culture while celebrating your love in a way that feels highly personal. This Detroit wedding itinerary is a great example how to create a perfect combination of romance, sophistication, and culinary excellence, and I hope it will inspire you to craft your wedding day that feels uniquely yours!
