Pictured Rocks Elopement Guide: Everything You Need to Know
For couples seeking an adventurous elopement, Miners Falls in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is a magnificent waterfall that I thought existed only in places like Hawaii and Iceland. Nestled in the heart of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, this steep location affected by all the elements is a setting for couples who don’t mind getting dirty and want to exchange vows surrounded by wilderness.
Kaylee and Alex dreamt of eloping to a place where waters cascade down rocky cliffs, trees form a natural canopy above, and the only sounds are the rush of water. I was in awe when I saw Kaylee descending towards the base of the falls on a muddy trail like a gazelle, because metaphorically – this steep waterfall trail is like a black diamond of the ski slopes.

Why Choose Miners Falls at Pictured Rocks for your Elopement?
Miners Falls, located near Munising in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is a 40 feet tall waterfall, cascading over the sandstone cliffs. As Kaylee and Alex got situated for their waterfall elopement ceremony, the falls were sending a fine mist into the air which made for moody images. The waterfall was so loud that the couple’s elopement vows remained completely intimate and private.
One of the biggest benefits of eloping at Miners Falls is the solitude of the location. While the falls are part of the well-known Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, the Miners Falls trail is often less crowded than other nearby attractions. The trail leading to the waterfall is only about a 0.6-mile hike, making it easily accessible for those who are not up for a strenuous hiking journey.

Miners Falls Elopement Attire
Kylee knew she wanted a flowy elopement dress, so she chose an elegant embroidered gown with drape shoulders. It looked romantic and comfortable for movement while hiking in her boots. Alex on the other hand chose a gray suit with ochre accents for his tie and boutonnière. They both wore backpacks to carry snacks, extra clothing, blankets, a polaroid camera and a bottle of bubbly for the post-ceremony celebration.
As we walked through the forest, the sounds of the waterfall grew louder, building our anticipation for the breathtaking view of the elopement location at the end of the trail. Kaylee and Alex, two Minnesota natives, booked me for eight hours of elopement coverage to experience a relaxed day without a rushed timeline. They have never visited the Upper Peninsula, but felt immediately connected to the raw, unspoiled wilderness of the Great Lakes state that we explored together.

Planning a Waterfall Elopement at Pictured Rocks
1. When to Go: Best Season for a Waterfall Elopement
The Upper Peninsula experiences all four seasons in full, each bringing its own magic to Miners Falls. Here’s what to consider when planning your elopement:
– Spring and Summer: While May and June can still be a little chilly, July and August are the most popular months to visit Miners Falls. The trails are open, and the falls are flowing strongly from the spring runoff. The lush wildflowers in the surrounding forest add vibrant colors to elopement photos, making for picturesque vow location.
– Fall: If you dream of an elopement surrounded by rich autumn colors, September and October are perfect. The hardwood trees around Miners Falls turn orange, red, and yellow, creating a stunning contrast against the waterfall’s white and gray tones. Fall in the Upper Peninsula is particularly beautiful, but it is also the time when the weather can turn rainy and cold.
– Winter: For those who prefer a serene and quiet atmosphere, winter at Miners Falls is cold! The falls freeze into stunning ice formations, and the surrounding woods are blanketed in snow. That being said, winter elopements can offer a unique, quiet, and very intimate atmosphere, though you should be prepared for colder temperatures, wear suitable footwear and warm clothes, and ensure that the trail is safe to hike.

Making the Most of a Miners Falls Elopement at Pictured Rocks
After Kaylee and Alex exchanged their private elopement vows at the falls, they hiked to one of the beaches at the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore for snacks and a champagne toast. The adventurous couple got into the frigid waters of Lake Superior, which also made for absolutely whimsical and ethereal elopement images.
The Upper Peninsula landscape offers miles of hiking trails, stunning views of Lake Superior, and more waterfalls to discover. Some couples opt to take a boat tour or kayak at Pictured Rocks to observe the cliffs and caves from the water—an unforgettable way to explore the landscape.

2. Pictured Rocks Travel and Accessibility
Miners Falls is located in a remote area, but it’s still relatively easy to access. The trailhead is located on a well-maintained road, and the hike to the falls is short and manageable. Make sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes and a backpack with extra clothing if you plan on hiking to the base of the falls!
The nearest town is Munising with options for lodging and restaurants. If you’re looking to stay in an Airbnb or a cozy cabin, Munising has a lot to offer. If you’re aiming for a boutique hotel or a charming bed and breakfast, Marquette might be a better option.
